titleOfInvention System for centrifugation and for classification of particulate materials
abstract Colloidal particles can be separated from a suspension (13) by means of a centrifuge comprising a volume of static fluid (44) formed before the introduction of the starting mud. This gives a more precise sorting fraction. A sorting system, comprising a number of centrifuges of this type (233, 236, 237, 238) arranged in cascade, makes it possible to obtain multiple fractions of submicron sorting in cases where the starting material is a well dispersed grout of colloidal particles and where the flow rate and the speed of rotation in and through each of the centrifuges are regulated in real time. Such submicron sorting fractions often exhibit a dilatance rheology and, therefore, are very difficult to remove from the full bowl of centrifuge. The present invention describes a method for facilitating the removal of such dilating cakes through the use of an excess amount of dispersant which is effective in dispersing colloids and making a plastic cake rather than dilating, while also having little impact on dispersion rheology.
