Alkyl tert-alkyl ethers can be split into the underlying alkanols and ter-olefins in a column apparatus in the presence of strongly acidic substances, the strongly acidic substance being provided at the bottom of the column. The process is particularly favorable if a stream of water is sent to the inflowing tert-olefin below the uppermost column bottom and is removed again above the bottom circulation of the column; if an insoluble, strongly acidic substance is used, this is arranged in a catalyst bed at the foot of the column, and the alkyl tert-alkyl ether is preferably fed between the catalyst bed and the bottom circulation evaporator. |
