abstract A peptide precursor of the ACV (aminoadipyl-cysteinyl-­nvaline) type, in which the valine moiety may be replaced nby any readily available amino acid may be converted ninto a cephalosporin of the type n nwhere R₁ is H, lower alkyl or functionalized carboxylic ngroup and R₂ is H or lower alkyl, by reacting the nprecursor with novel cyclase, epimerase and ring nexpansion enzymes isolated from a cell-free extract nof a prokaryotic organism such as Streptomyces clavuligerus . nThe three novel enzymes may be immobilized separately nor together on a suitable support medium and the conversion nmay be carried out in a continuous mode.
