titleOfInvention Contact or insertion laser probe having wide angle radiation
abstract A laser medical probe (10) adapted for direct contact with, or insertion into, tissue undergoing laser treatment. The probe includes a diffusing portion (12) defined by a roughened or frosted surface which serves to irregularly reflect and refract laser energy incident thereon. The probe exhibits a broad radiation pattern including radial and scattered radiation along the length of the probe. The probe is preferably of conical shape to facilitate insertion into tissue. A flange (16) may advantageously be placed on the probe to limit the tissue insertion depth thereof. The diffusing surface is generally along the outside conical surface of the probes although probes having a hollow center and roughened inside surface are contemplated.
