abstract A process for preparing an optically active mercapto ncompound having asymmetrical centers having the formula: n nin which R₁ represents an alkyl group, R represents a nhydrogen atom or an alkyl group, C* represents an asymmetric ncarbon, n represents the value of 1 or 2, is disclosed. The nprocess involves the reaction of a cultured microorganism nhaving ability of asymmetrically hydolyzing ester bonds of nthe raw mamterial, thus eliminating the need for protecting nfree mercapto groups which are unstable in the reaction nconditions. The optically active mercapto compound is nuseful as a raw material for producing a compound having nmedicinal effects such as antihypertensive activity.
