Optically active and mesogenic 1,3-dioxolane-4-carboxylic acid esters are suitable as dopants in liquid crystal mixtures. They lead to liquid-crystalline ferroelectric phases with short switching times and to electroclinic phases with large electroclinic coefficients. Their particular advantage lies in the fact that they induce a helix with a very large pitch, so that helix compensation by further dopants is not necessary. In addition, the 1,3-dioxolane-4-carboxylic acid esters show high UV stability. |
