titleOfInvention Method and apparatus for monitoring analytes in fluids
abstract The invention includes a photometer (10) and na photometric test strip (31) for use with the photonmeter for monitoring the presence and amount of an nanalyte in a liquid sample. The photometer (10) nincludes a light source (25) and a photodetector (26) nwhich form an optical path for detecting light transnmitted through a test strip (31). The latter has a ndry support and an indicator portion, both of which nallow light of predetermined frequencies to be transnmitted therethrough. The photometer (10) includes nan electrical circuit (21) for generating a signal nproportional to detected light and for generating an noutput signal representative of the presence and amount nof the analyte in the sample of blood being monitored. nIn a preferred embodiment, the invention includes the nuse of a nonbibulous test strip (31) having a nonbibulous nindicator portion thereon through which light is transnmitted and detected following deposition of a blood nsample thereon. The photometer may be calibrated to nproduce an output reading and resonse to the transnmitted light which is representative of the milligram npercentage of glucose in the blood being monitored.
