abstract | This invention relates novel organotantalum catalysts comprising tantalum and a silyl-substituted cyclopentadienyl moiety having the formula C₅H 5-x (SiR⁶₃) x , wherein each R⁶ may be the same or different and is hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl or alkoxy, and x is an integer from 1 to 5. It also relates to a process for the selective dimerization of a 1-olefin to a dimer having a 1-butene moiety which comprises contacting the 1-olefin with the novel organotantalum catalyst at a reaction temperature and pressure such that the dimer which is optionally substituted at the 2,3-carbon atoms is formed. n The organotantalum catalysts of the present invention exhibit a higher activity towards the dimerization of 1-olefins than the known tantalum dimerization catalysts. n The novel tantalum catalysts of this invention may be prepared in a two-part synthesis. The first part consists of synthesizing the cyclopentadienyl group containing at least one tri-substituted silyl moiety and the second part consists of synthesizing the novel tantalum compounds containing said cyclopentadienyl group. |
