abstract New substituted pyrido [2,3-b] [1,4] benzodiazepin-6-ones of the general formula I are described in the R¹ is an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a chlorine atom or a hydrogen atom; R² is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group; R³ and R⁴ each represent a hydrogen atom, a fluorine, chlorine or bromine atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, but with the proviso that at least one of the radicals R¹, R², R³ and R⁴ is different from hydrogen, R⁵ and R⁶ represent the same or different alkyl radicals with up to 6 carbon atoms or together with the nitrogen atom in between form a 4- to 7-membered, saturated, monocyclic, heteroaliphatic ring which can optionally be interrupted by an oxygen atom or by the N-CH₃ group, Z is either a single bond or an oxygen atom, a methylene or 1,2-ethylene group and A is a methylene group in the 2- or 3-position of the heteroaliphatic ring, when linked in the 3-position are also a single bond, and their salts with inorganic or organic acids, processes for the preparation of these compounds and their use in the preparation of medicaments.n n n The compounds of general formula I have favorable effects on the heart rate and are suitable in view of the lack of gastric acid secretion-inhibiting, salivation-inhibiting and mydriatic influences, as well as excellent absorption as vagal pacemakers for the treatment of bradycardias and bradyarrhythmias in human and veterinary medicine.
