titleOfInvention Process for the removal of dimethyl ether from methyl chloride
abstract A process is described for removing dimethyl ether in methyl chloride by catalytic cleavage using hydrogen chloride. Dimethyl ether is contained as an impurity in crude methyl chloride, which is obtained in the catalytic methanol esterification. The crude methyl chloride is cooled so that water and hydrogen chloride separate out. Gaseous hydrogen chloride is then added to the methyl chloride in an amount which corresponds to at least twice the molar amount of dimethyl ether, and the gaseous mixture is passed at elevated temperature via a methanol esterification contact.
