abstract A method and apparatus for disposing of toxic waste materials by combustion in a modified piston type internal combustion engine (7). The engine (7) contains a combustion chamber which is divided into a variable volume primary chamber (35) and a fixed volume secondary chamber (37), in which the combustion occurs. The secondary chamber (37) contains a source of carbon (77) which enhances the combustion of the toxic waste materials.
