titleOfInvention | NEW PHENAZINE DYES. |
abstract | Phenazine-based dyes and in particular phenazine-based dyes which can be used as intermediates in the preparation of leuco-phenazine dyes. Essentially all phenazine dyes capable of imparting the hues of red, orange and magenta have unsubstituted amino groups at the 3 or 7 position or both. Acylation at position 10 is a well-known process for obtaining stabilized leukophenazine dyes. However, the phenazine dyes known in the art, such as phenosafranin, which are red, magenta and the like, do not reproduce the color of the original dye upon reduction of acylation and reoxidation. Further, a phenazine dye acylated at position 10 and containing a free amine group at positions 3 and / or 7 produces a very unstable form of leuco dye in an imaging system containing a metal nitrate, due to the presence of the unsubstituted amine group. The present invention makes it possible to obtain 3,7-diamino-phenazine dyes having at least one electron-withdrawing substituent on at least one of the groups bonded to the nitrogen atoms of the amine groups in positions 3 and 7. The group containing the electron withdrawing substituent may be selected from (1) a substituted alkyl group, and (2) a substituted aryl group. These dyes can be used to prepare reduced leuco dyes which can be oxidized to the colors red, yellow, magenta and orange. It is possible to provide the dyes in their leuco form with sufficient stability to avoid premature oxidation in imaging systems. The oxidized form of phenazine dyes has good heat and light stability. |
