abstract | Chewing gum compositions and methods of preparing these compositions are described which use plasticizer-carbohydrate syrup compositions to improve flexibility and shelf life characteristics. Syrup includes carbohydrate solids and water, less than 30% of solids having a degree of polymerization (DP) of 1 and more than 20% of solids having a degree of polymerization (DP) equal to or greater to 4. The ratio between the carbohydrate solids and the plasticizer in the composition is between 0.5: 1 and 100: 1 and the total water content of the composition is less than 20%. The syrup-plasticizer composition is prepared using a carbohydrate syrup or combined syrups having an appropriate distribution of carbohydrate solids, combining a plasticizer such as glycerin or propylene glycol and making evaporating the water from the combined syrup-plasticizer composition. The chewing gum made with the evaporated syrup composition comprises approximately between 5% and approximately 75% of a gum base, between approximately 5% and approximately 75% of a sweetening agent, between approximately 5% and 75% about the evaporated syrup composition and any ingredients used in conventional chewing gum. |
