The glyoxylic acid ester and the water and / or the alcohol are partially or completely in chemically bound form. A higher alcohol R'OH with a boiling point above 180 ° C. is added and the water and / or the alcohol ROH and then the glyoxylic acid ester are distilled off at a pressure of at most 800 mbar.
