titleOfInvention Process for selectively separating plutonium from uranium and other metals
The invention relates to a method for the selective separation of plutonium and uranium. The aim is to provide a simple process for the separation of plutonium and uranium, which is suitable for the recovery of plutonium from nuclear power plant burn-ups and other radioactive waste and which does not have the disadvantages of the known processes, in particular the exposure time of the organic material in areas of high radiation density and should be reduced the amount of organic material used should be kept as low as possible. It should only run in an aqueous environment, as this avoids the problems of phase transition kinetics and density fluctuations in two-phase systems. This is accomplished by performing the following stages: a) to a solution containing Pu⁴⁺ and UO₂²⁺, sulfuric acid is added in such an amount that the uranium forms anionic sulfato complexes, then a cationic surfactant is added, the resulting precipitate is separated from its mother liquor in a manner known per se; and b) after the removal of the uranium-containing precipitate in the remaining mother liquor, the pH is changed so that now the Pu⁴⁺ forms anionic sulfato complexes, then further cationic surfactant is added, the resulting precipitate is separated from its mother liquor in a manner known per se and that Plutonium obtained from the precipitation.
