titleOfInvention Process for the preparation of a crystalline swellable sheet-like silicate of the saponite type
abstract A crystalline swellable sheet silicate of the saponite type of the formula is produced [Mg₆ (Si 8-x Al x ) O₂₀ (OH) ₄] x- · M z + n H₂O in the x is a number less than 1.5 but at least 0.2, z is an integer from 1 to 3, M is a cation of valence z and n is a number below 20. This will an aqueous solution or suspension containing magnesium ions, a silica source, an alumina source and a sodium oxide source. The atomic ratio Mg / Si and Mg / Al used correspond to the composition of the desired saponite. The atomic ratio (Na-Al): (Mg + Si + 3/2 · Al) should be between x / 5 and 1, where Na means the amount of sodium atoms present in alkaline compounds. The pH of the reaction mixture should be at least 9.0. The crystals of the synthetic saponite formed in the sodium form are separated from the mother liquor and optionally treated with an aqueous solution or suspension of a salt with the cation M z + and, after the cation exchange has taken place, separated from the aqueous phase.
