abstract | Disclosed are methods and devices for determining blood group classifications from blood or serum samples. The test device comprises: (a) a porous solid substrate and (b) one or more essentially pure antibodies specifically reactive with erythrocyte antigenic determinants characterizing blood groups wherein the antibodies are bound to the porous solid substrate in an array of delimited adsorption areas of differing specificities such that they are capable of binding erythrocytes for which they are specifically reactive so as to produce detectable color signals. The test device may be used to determine the blood group classification of a sample by (a) incubating the test device with a sample of blood, the type of which is to be determined; (b) rinsing the test device and (c) detecting a color signal from erythrocytes bound to antibodies which are themselves bound to the solid substrate. Also provided are methods and devices for determining blood group classifications by backtyping from serum samples. |
