The present invention relates to a method of providing on na surface an active and/or hydrophobic coating which comnprises applying to said surface a coating of an organoalumininum compound of the formula n nwherein R represents an amido carboxyl moiety selected from nthe group consisting of: n nor n nwherein R¹ and R² may be the same or different and are selectned from the group consisting of hydrogen, an alkyl radical of nrom 1 to about 20 carbon atoms, an aryl or aralkyl radical of nfrom 6 to about 20 carbon atoms, and an alkenyl radical of from n3 to about 20 carbon atoms; R³ is a hydrocarbyl radical of from n1 to about 6 carbon atoms; and the sum of the carbon atoms nin R¹ and R² is in the range of from 0 to about 40, and the sum nof the carbon atoms in R¹, R² and R³ is at least 2; nR″ is a modifier moiety selected from the group consistning of hydroxyl, an alkoxy radical of from 1 to about 6 carbon natoms, or carboxyl radical of from 1 to about 6 carbon atoms; nR′ comprises either a group as defined for R, which may nbe the same or different from R, or an active moiety, said active nmoiety being bonded to the aluminium by a carboxylate, sulnphonate, phosphate, phosphite, oxa or thia linkage. |
