titleOfInvention Microporous membrane laminate
abstract A membrane or laminate (10) consisting essentially of nmicroporous polymerized material (12) consisting nessentially of a precursor material which forms a nhomogenous solution with a liquid vehicle and is 1) nrapidly polymerizable under ultraviolet or electron beam nirradiation to a polymerized material, which is insoluble nand nondispersible in the liquid vehicle, and 2) selected nfrom the group consisting of organic monomers, organic noligomers, and mixtures thereof which are soluble in the nliquid vehicle, the liquid vehicle being inert relative to nthe precursor material and optionally a support material n(14) laminated directly to the microporous material. The nprecursor microporous material may include a hydrophobic nmonomer. The instant invention further provides a method nfor manufacturing the fluid permeable microporous membrane nlaminate (10) including the steps of mixing the precursor nmaterial into the liquid vehicle, forming the composition ninto a thin liquid layer, applying a support material (14) ninto intimate contact with the liquid layer, exposing the ncombined liquid layer and support material (14) to nultraviolet or electron beam irradiation to finally cure nthe liquid layer and form a laminate with the support n n nmaterial 14, and removing the liquid vehicle from the nlaminate (10).
