abstract | Polycarbonate resins are sulfonated by reaction with a nsulfur trioxide-phosphate ester complex, preferably a 2:1 ncomplex of sulfur trioxide with triethylphosphate. The sulfonnated polymer is preferably converted to a salt, typically by nreaction with a metal salt of a β-diketone in a non-polar nmedium. The resulting sulfonate salts are useful as flame nretardant agents for aromatic polycarbonates. |
