titleOfInvention | Method for extending the temperature range for the Arctic phase A of liquid crystal compositions. |
abstract | Liquid crystal compositions composed of a first part comprising between 40 and 99% by weight of an aggregate of one or more substances selected from one or more classes from the six classes of compounds of formulas (1) to (3 ') (where R is everywhere an alkyl chain containing between 2 and 18 carbon atoms and R 'is everywhere an alkyl chain containing between 1 and 17 carbon atoms, and where one or more non-adjacent CH2 groups are replaced by oxygen atoms), and a second part comprising between 1 and 60% by weight of one or more substances with high birefringence and having a strong positive dielectric anisotropy, which increase the transition temperature SA-N. These compositions have a smectic phase A characterized by a relatively low boiling point and a wide smectic range. These compositions can be used in liquid crystal elements, not only for applications in displays or in optical information processing, but, for example, also in temperature measurement applications. The operation of these elements may involve laser addressing, thermal or electrical addressing. |
