abstract | Disclosed are a complex and coordination salts, and optically resolved enantiomers thereof, having the formula (R)3---M, wherein R comprises 1,10-phenanthroline or a substituted derivative thereof , M comprises a suitable transition metal, for example ruthenium (II) or cobalt (III), and R is linked to M by a coordinate bond. These complexes are useful in DNA labeling, nicking and cleaving methods. The lambda enantiomer of these compounds is useful in specific Z-DNA labeling, detection, nicking and cleavage methods. These compounds can also be used in a method of destroying tumor cells, and can be combined with a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient to form a pharmaceutical composition for treating tumor cells in a patient. The invention further relates to methods of treating a patient with tumor cells. |
