A secondary virus-binding receptor occurs in nature on the surface of animal and plant cells. It is considered that this receptor is necessary for a virus to be able to penetrate into target cells. It has been discovered that this secondary receptor binds to a wide variety of viruses, belonging to a large number of different families. The secondary receptor and natural or synthetic substances corresponding to the binding epitope of the secondary receptor, or analogous thereto, in that they can bind to a site on the virus which recognizes the binding epitope of the natural secondary receptor, are therefore indicated for the diagnosis, prophylaxis or treatment of viral infections. |
