abstract | A ceramic plate susceptible to luminescence when exposed to x-rays or other ionizing radiation comprises a fine powder bound in liquid glass, such as hydroxyl silicates of potassium or sodium, or borates of potassium or sodium. The powder generally has an average particle size of less than 50 mum, for example 10 mum. The powder consists of calcium borate, yttrium aluminate, zinc yttrium silicate, calcium silicate, calcium germanate, magnesium borate, barium borate, strontium borate. The doping substances can be Tb, Tm, Ce, Eu, Pr, Yb, Mn, Cu, Ag, Pb in amounts equal to or greater than 15% by weight. The plate is formed by mixing the powder and the liquid glass so as to form a paste. The dough is pressed into a mold to remove excess liquid glass and it is baked at around 950oC for around 8 hours. Alternatively, it is possible to use excess water by mixing the powder and the liquid glass. This excess water is allowed to evaporate while the plate is in a mold before pressing and baking. This plate can be used as a front plate of a cathode ray tube, as a detector in an X-ray thermoluminescent system or in an X-ray scintillator. |
