titleOfInvention Nitrification/denitrification of waste material
abstract Method for treating waste, where the waste is subjected to aeration periods with air or another oxygen-containing gas, to produce biological oxidation and nitrification, alternating with periods where aeration is interrupted to allow the development of anaerobic conditions in the waste allowing biological denitrification of the waste. Aeration is interrupted when the rate of change in the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the waste reaches or exceeds a predetermined value, for example 0.1 to 4 mg / l / hour, and resumed once that the nitrate concentration in the waste is reduced to a desired level, for example after 4 hours. The method is preferably used in a single container (1). The waste enters via the inlet (13) and leaves via the outlet (14); the arrival and departure of waste is preferably continuous. The flow of air to the diffuser (12) can be cut by means located in the duct (11), these means being controlled by a signal processor which controls the rate of change of the dissolved oxygen levels detected by the sensor (9). Chemicals to remove phosphorous-based nutrients can be added to the waste before or during processing.
