abstract Novel dichroic azo dyes having a skeleton represented by formula (I) at one end of the major axis of an azo compound molecule, and a liquid crystal composition containing dissolved therein the dichroic azo dye. The dichroic dyes show a large dichroic ratio and excellent durability, and the composition is utilized as a useful display element.
