abstract Process for the batchwise production of azo dyes of the formula ?? N = - ?? wherein A is the residue of a diazo component of the benzene or naphthalene series and B is the residue of a coupling component of the benzene or naphthalene series, these residues being bonded to the azo group in the o-position to the hydroxyl groups, characterized in that an amine is added in aqueous solution the formula ?? NH2 diazotized and in the presence of Ca² <+> and / or Mg² <+> ions with a coupling component of the formula H- ?? couples, the pH being between 8 and 10 in the case where B contains a sulfo group and not above 11.5 in the case where B does not have a sulfo group. The present invention enables the production of the azo dyes mentioned in high yields.
