abstract | Processes for reducing the content of inorganic acid containing sulfur and organic sulfonic acid of low equivalent weight of an acidic mass comprising organic sulfonic components and contaminants of inorganic sulfonating agents. This process generally comprises the following steps: a) treatment of the acidic mass with ammonia in the presence of water in order to neutralize the acids in said acidic mass and to form a mixture containing the ammonium salts of said acids, b) separation of the mixture to provide a lower aqueous phase containing the water-soluble ammonium salts and an upper phase comprising the oleophilic alcohol and the ammonium salts of organic sulfonic acids, and c) recovering at least part of said upper phase . The efficiency of reducing unwanted materials from the acidic mass can be increased by subjecting the recovered upper phase to additional water extractions in the presence of the oleophilic alcohol. Ammonium salts of organic sulfonic acids recovered by the aforementioned process can be converted into oil-soluble metal salts by reacting said ammonium salts with a basic reacting metal compound in amounts and conditions to form metal salts of said sulfonic acids. organic. The metal salts prepared in this way can be neutral or strongly basic metal salts. Neutral and basic metal salts are useful in a variety of applications, including as lubricants and fuels. |
