abstract Novel water soluble polymers are formed from one or more unsaturated monomers and contain acid groups selected from carboxylic, sulphuric and sulphonic acid groups, or water soluble salts thereof, and have Mw of from 1,000 to 100,000 (measured on the full sodium salt), and polydispersity below 1.5. The polymers are useful as dispersing agents, especially as thinners in drilling or packer fluids, and are useful in detergent compositions as detergent builders or anti-retention aids.
