titleOfInvention Apparatus and process for object analysis by pertubation of interference fringes
abstract Objects to be examined, such as tissue 30 or any cellular nor crystalline material, e.g. semiconductor wafers, are placed nin a region of confluence of two interfering coherent beams nof radiation which are at the same frequency and phase and nat a frequency to which the object is semi-transparent. The nbeams are produced by separate sources 23, 24 or by renfraction by a Fresnel biprism 43 or any other interferometer nstructure. An off-axis parabolic reflection system 52, 54 is also ndisclosed. The interference fringe phase and amplitude perntubation produced by the object is detected 31 and examined nto derive information regarding physical properties of the nobject or abnormalities in its structure. Such abnormalities, nas fractures or latent stresses in a semi-conductor wafer or nthe presence of tumors in biological tissue can be deternmined. Chemical characteristics of living tissue is determined nby sweeping the frequency of the coherent radiation over a nband which includes the absorption bands of given chemicals nsuch as hydrogen, oxygen, sodium, and other materials nwhich are representative of the structure of living tissue. The nfrequencies employed may be in the microwave band, milnlimeter band or higher. The information derived from the npertubation in the interference fringe pattern is presented in ntwo-dimensional or three-dimension (holographic) displays nafter suitable computer-processing.
