titleOfInvention Disposable contraceptive cervical barrier
abstract A disposable cervical contraceptive barrier (10) has a thin, flexible bowl-shaped member (12) and a circular edge (14) that is substantially thicker and unitary with the flexible member. The edge (14) provides a spring tension effect to help hold the barrier in place. A plurality of cavities (16) are formed in the flange and spaced at an equal distance around it. The cavities are open so that a certain quantity of spermicide can be received and retained. Alternatively, the flexible member itself may be provided with a plurality of grooves (316) for retaining the spermicide. The barrier is preferably based on a mixture of hydrophilic polymer foam and on a more conventional system of polyurethane polyester catalyst and prepolymer. The mixture is molded in a closed mold whose volume is equal to approximately 10% of the volume that the material would occupy if it could foam freely. The finished product is similar to an elastomer, except that internally it has a dense cellular structure and is connected by an impermeable envelope.
