abstract N-Acetyl-D (L) -α-aminocarboxylic acids are thermally racemized by melting them, adding a small amount of acetic anhydride to the melt and then heating them to a temperature between the melting temperature and about 210 ° C. until practically complete racemization and then quench the melt with an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide or ammonia solution. The residence time required for complete racemization depends on the heating temperature of the melt in such a way that the higher the heating temperature, the shorter it becomes.
