abstract A novel color-forming reagent represented by formula (I): wherein R1, R2, R3, and R4 may be the same or different and each represents lower alkyl, X1 and X2 each represents -O(CH2)nSO3M (wherein M represents hydrogen, alkali metal ion or NH4+, and n represents an integer of 2 to 4) or one of X1 and X2 represents -O(CH2)nSO3M (wherein M and n are as defined above) and the other represents hydrogen. The reagent has an excellent solubility in water in the neutral region, is stable as an aqueous solution for a long time, has high color-forming sensitivity, forms a stable color having an absorption in a longer wavelength side, and is used for determining an oxidative substance while avoiding the influence of coloration-inhibiting substances. It enables the adjustment of the coloration sensitivity.
