titleOfInvention | Wheelchair operated by hand pedalled reciprocating motion |
abstract | Wheelchair (10) and drive mechanism powered by the reciprocating movement of a drive lever (26). The drive mechanism (24) provides a continuously variable gear ratio allowing operation of the wheelchair at different speeds and on different slopes; the mechanism is easily attached to a standard wheelchair using a bayonet mount associated with the drive (Fig. 6). A ratchet wheel of the drive mechanism (42) comprises an upper and lower radial rack (43, 44), fixed so as to be able to rotate about an axis (25). Each rack includes a ratchet assembly (45, 46) engaged with ratchet wheel teeth positioned at the circumference (49) to transfer to the ratchet wheel the driving energy applied to the radial racks by the link arms (31 , 32). The latter are coupled to a reciprocating lever arm (26) and act in concert with the pawls to engage alternately with them and transfer energy to, or disengage from, the pawl wheel. While one link arm and the associated pawl transfer energy to the pawl wheel, the other link arm releases an associated pawl from the pawl wheel. The energy is transferred during the race both to the front and to the rear of the lever arm to effectively drive the wheelchair. |
