abstract An apparatus in which the presence of toner particles is detected. The apparatus includes a detector member (60) adapted to be charged by the toner particles (68) in contact therewith. A signal is transmitted in response to the detector member being charged to indicate the presence of toner particles in contact with the member. The signal is used to control the dispensing of toner particles from a hopper (66) so as to maintain the required thickness of toner particles in a wedge-shaped layer (62) in the region of contact of a layer of toner particles on a magnetic brush (32) with a photoreceptor (10).
