There are disclosed novel substituted and bridged pyridines having the formulan wherein:n R is hydrogen; C 1 -C 8 straight chain or branched alkyl; benzyl; R 1 and R 4 are, e.g., hydrogen or hydrocarbon having up to 8 carbon atoms; R 2 and R 3 are, e.g., hydrocarbon having up to 8 carbon atoms; C3-C e cycloalkyl; C 2 -C 8 alkyl interrupted by 1 to 2 oxygen atoms or substituted with NR 5 R 6 wherein R 5 and R 6 can independently by hydrogen, C 1 -C 8 alkyl, aralkyl wherein the alkyl groups has up to 8 carbon atoms and the aryl has 6 carbon atoms, or R 5 and R 6 together with the N atom can be joined to form a 5-or 6-membered ring wherein the 6-membered ring can contain an 0 or N hetereoatom and the N heteroatom can be substituted with C 1 -C 6 alkyl; X, W, Z and U can independently by, e.g., hydrogen; phenyl; halo or NO 2 ; provided that two of X, W, Z and U are hydrogen; or, X and W, W and Z, or Z and U, together with the phenyl ring form naphthyl or benzooxadiazole rings; Y is O; S; SO; n is 0 or 1; and, the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof. Those compounds are useful as calcium entry blockers. |
