abstract A recording element (16) comprising an amorphous optical recording layer (42) of a dye and a binder having an absorption factor of at least 20 at a first wavelength and being substantially transparent at a second wavelength is characterized in that a ceramic overcoat (41) having a thickness up to 0.05 µm is coated overthe recording layer. The element may be used for recording digital information using a pulse-modulated laser beam e.g. a diode laser beam.
