titleOfInvention Apparatus for the quantitative and qualitative determination of particles containing hydrocarbons and suspended in gas
abstract Suspended particles from burns of organic material contain toxic, higher hydrocarbons (tar) on the surface if the oxygen supply is insufficient. This tar has the property of being photoelectrically more active than other substances found in the atmosphere. In the device according to the invention, the aerosol to be examined is passed through a chamber (3) and permeated with ultraviolet light by means of a lamp (4). A controllable fan (9) maintains a preselectable flow through the chamber (3). The charge on the photoelectrically positively charged particles is then measured using size-selective filters (10a, 10b) and their connected current or charge measuring devices (11a, 11b). It represents a measure of the amount of tar on the particle surfaces in the aerosol. The device is particularly suitable for measuring air pollution.
