abstract The invention relates to a process for the preparation of high molecular weight polyphenylene ethers from monohydric phenols, by oxidative coupling reaction with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst complex composed of a copper salt and an organic amine of the general formula: where R 1 is a branched or unbranched alkylidene or alkenylidene chain with 2 to 20 C atoms, the substituent R 2 is a hydrogen atom or C 1 - to C 12 -alkyl or C s - to C 8 -cycloalkyl groups, which may be functional groups such as OR 3 , NHR 3 , SR 3 , in which R 3 can in turn be a hydrogen atom of the C 1 to C 12 alkyl or C 5 to C 8 cycloalkyl groups, comprises in the presence of an aromatic hydrocarbon as solvent.n n n Preferred amines are 2-methyl-3-phenylpropylamine, N-methyl-N- (1-ethyl-3-phenylpropyl) amine, 1-ethyl-3-methyl-3-phenylpropylamine, N- (2-methyl- 3-phenylpropyl) -i N- (3-tert-butyloxypropyl) amine or N-2- (methyl-3-phenylpropyl) -N- (3,5,5-trimethylhexyl) amine.
