titleOfInvention | Detecting an immunological reaction with activated red blood cells (erythrocytes) |
abstract | The present invention relates to immunological reactions in connection or not with a blood group. A method of blood typing is described in which known antibodies are attached directly to a solid surface and the red blood cells presented for the immunological reaction are activated by treating them with a proteolytic enzyme. A reverse blood typing procedure uses synthetic or purified antigens that can also be attached to a solid surface. The surface is then brought into contact with an unknown blood component to allow an immunological reaction between the antibodies and the previously attached antigens. A solution of red blood cells is used as an indicator mechanism and is activated before use by treating it with a proteolytic enzyme. The process of the invention can be applied to immunological reactions unrelated to a blood group, where purified antigens or antibodies or synthetic substances are attached directly to a solid surface. The surface is then brought into contact with an unknown fluid which may contain antigens or antibodies specific to those fixed beforehand. A solution of red blood cells comprising the known antigen or antibody attached to the solid surface is then brought into contact so as to cause an immune reaction indicating the presence of specific antigens or antibodies in the unknown fluid. |
