INJECTABLE AND PHYSIOLOGICALLY ACCEPTABLE POLYMER COMPOSITIONS. |
abstract |
Novel physiologically acceptable polymeric compositions and methods of using the same. Numerous polymeric compositions have been tried as alloplastic implants in mammals. They are disadvantageous because they require surgical implantation, they are not integratable into surrounding tissues and their size and shape must be predetermined. Initial attempts to use solidifying compositions were dental filling materials, bone cements and tissue adhesives. Polisiloxane gels were found to leach low-molecular weight compounds into surrounding tissues. Solidifying compositions of bovine collagen solutions were resorbed over time. Disclosed is a non-toxic physiologically acceptable polymeric composition, comprised of water insoluble non-cross linked polymeric compounds, whose solubility is between 9.2 and 15.5 (cal/cc)1/2, dissolved in a polar, non-toxic water miscible solvent. The composition solidifies when placed in contact with living tissue. Its principal uses include fillings for ducts or cavities and reinforcements and connections for tissues. |
