abstract | New epoxy-polyester graft copolymer and novel solvent-based thermosetting coating composition containing said copolymer and a blocked polyisocyanate crosslinking agent. The coating composition can be formulated as a hot sprayable coating composition, with a high solid content, suitable for use as a splinter resistant primer for motor vehicles and designed for use on areas of body panels subjected to chipping action due to stones, gravel and other debris on the road. Alternatively, this composition may be formulated as a composition with a high content of sprayable solids by means of a conventional spraying apparatus. The epoxy-polyester graft copolymer is prepared by polymerization of lactone monomers in the presence of a functional hydroxy epoxy ester resin precursor. A precursor resin is formed by the reaction of a long chain diepoxide with a functional hydroxy secondary amine in a chain terminating reaction. |
