Trialkanoyloxysilanes of formula I wherein R 'H, an alkyl group with 1-10 C atoms, in which one or two non-adjacent CH 2 groups can also be replaced by 0 atoms, F, CI, Br or CN, R ? an alkyl group with 1-5 C atoms, A 'and A 2 each 1,4-phenylene or 1,4-cyclohexylene groups and n 2,3,4,5 or 6 mean, can be used to create a homeotropic orientation of liquid crystalline phases on surfaces.
