abstract Compounds of the formulan whereinn A is =0, α-H:β-OH or α-OH:β-H; R 1 is H or a blocking group; and R 3 is H, C 1.8 alkyl, C 1.4 mono-, di- or tri-haloalkyl, -R 31 -O-R 32 or -R 31 -NR 33 R 34 in which R 31 is C 1-4 alkylene, R 32 is H or C 1-6 alkyl, R 33 is H or C, a alkyl and R 34 is H, C 1-6 alkyl or a blocking group, provided that the number of carbon atoms in R 31 and R 32 , in R 31 and R 33 and in R 31 and R 34 (if R 34 is alkyl) is not more than 7; and pharmacologically acceptable salts thereof. n These sugar-ring expanded analogues of spectinomycin and its C-6' derivatives are prepared from 7-membered sugar-ring spectinomycin and spectinomycin derivatives, by treatment with sodium borohydride.
