abstract The invention relates to methods for manufacturing a single mode optical fiber with linear polarization maintenance of a guided light wave, of the type comprising a step of forming a preform by shrinking from a tube (1) inside. from which deposits (3) of silica and dopants have been produced intended to form core and cladding regions of the optical fiber after stretching of the preform. According to the invention, one starts from a tube (1) with elliptical cross section and a blanking is created inside the tube at the time of shrinking. The fiber obtained has a heart of quasi-circular section and a sheath of elliptical section.
