abstract The DRAW recording medium achieves high playback contrast with an unusually thin layer of a dielectric light-responsive material (51) by taking advantage of multiple reflection paths (63-69) to align the phase of the reflected light such that strongly destructive interference of reading light occurs at each area where the light-responsive layer has been removed by a writing beam of light. The DRAW recording medium having sufficient contrast and background reflectivity to satisfy the International Electrotechnical Commission optical disc standard for videodiscs.
