abstract |
Quaternary ammonium compounds with at least one long-chain hydroxyalkyl radical are prepared by reacting the salt of a tertiary amine and a weak acid with an epoxy compound introducing the long-chain hydroxyalkyl radical in a stoichiometric ratio in water at elevated temperature under atmospheric pressure. The aqueous phase of the two-phase reaction mixture has a pH of at least 7 before the start of the reaction. |
