abstract A membrane-associated placental protein, called MP1, and a method for its production are described. The protein MP1 has the parameters: a) an electrophoretic mobility in the range between α2 and β1 globulins; b) an isoelectric point of 4.75 ± 0.15; c) a sedimentation coefficient S ° 20.w of 6.65 ± 0.15 S; d) a molecular weight of 180,000 ± 20,000 determined in the polyacrylamide gel containing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), the molecules of MP1 being built up from apparently identical subunits which have a molecular weight of 90,000 ± 10,000 and are held non-covalently together; c) an extinction coefficient E ??? (280 nm) of 8.2 ± 0.4; f) a carbohydrate content of 9.6 ± 2.5% (mannose 2.2 ± 0.5%, galactose 1.7 ± 0.4%, fucose 0.4 ± 0.2%, N-acetyl-glucosamine 3.2 ± 0.8%, N-acetyl-neuraminic acid 2.1 ± 0.6%) and g) a specific amino acid composition. MP1 can be used to prepare antisera that can be used to detect and determine MP1. Antibodies against MP1 can also be used for radioimmunological localization and for the immunotherapeutic treatment of tumors which produce MP1.
