titleOfInvention IMPROVEMENTS TO OR CONCERNING FLUID TREATMENT DEVICES.
abstract The fluid handling apparatus of the invention can be a heat exchange apparatus or a fluid reaction apparatus. The apparatus is provided with an interrupt structure (44) for dissociating the boundary layers of the fluids at the walls (20) of the apparatus and promoting the mixing of the separated boundary layers with the adjacent central layers (52). An interrupt structure includes a plurality of longitudinally spaced interrupt elements (46) mounted on a central rod (48), each element comprising a plurality of blade-like members (50) each having, at least approximately, a spherical segment profile in side elevation, the members extending mutually radially outward from each other to almost touch the surface or surfaces adjacent to the elements. In another variant, each element comprises a respective sphere (56). The elements are spaced longitudinally relative to each other by a distance necessary to obtain a fluid eddy interference flow, in which the vortex (54) upstream of an element cooperates with the vortex downstream of the next element in the fluid flow path. In a bundle exchanger, the type of fin structure is obtained in the interiors of the tubes, while the type of sphere structure is obtained in the shell of the exchanger in contact with the exteriors of the tubes.
