abstract | 2,4-diamino-6-halogen-5-trifluoromethylpyrimidines of the formula wherein X is a halogen atom, especially chlorine or fluorine; R 1 and R 2 each independently represent hydrogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl, C 3 -C 6 cycloalkyl or together a C a -C 7 alkylene bridge, have extremely selective herbicidal properties and are suitable for controlling weeds in crops of useful plants like corn, grain or soy. They are prepared by aminating 2,4,6-trihalogen-5-trifluoromethylpyrimidine, which in turn can be obtained by fluorinating 2,4,6-trihalopyrimidine-5-carboxylic acid. The 2,4,6-trihalogen-5-carboxylic acids are new intermediates and are obtained by oxidation in sulfuric acid using chromium trioxide of 2,4,6-trihalogen-5-methyl-, halomethyl- or -formylpyrimidine. |
